How GPA is Calculated

GPA = Sum of (Grade Points ร— Credit Hours) รท Total Credit Hours. A course with 3 credits and a B grade (3.0) contributes 9 quality points. Add all quality points, divide by total credits.

What is a Good GPA?

A GPA of 3.0 (B average) is generally considered a good GPA. Most graduate programs require at least a 3.0 for admission. Scholarships and honors programs often require 3.5 or higher. Cum laude honors typically start at 3.5, magna cum laude at 3.7, and summa cum laude at 3.9.

FAQs

What is a good GPA for college?
A 3.0 or higher is generally considered good. For competitive graduate schools or employers, a 3.5+ is preferred. Anything below 2.0 may put you on academic probation at most universities.
How do I raise my GPA?
Since GPA is a weighted average, early grades have a larger impact. Retaking failed courses, taking extra easy credits, and consistently performing well in remaining courses can raise your GPA over time.
Does a + or โˆ’ in a grade matter?
Yes โ€” an Aโˆ’ is 3.7 while an A is 4.0. Over many courses this difference adds up significantly. An Aโˆ’ instead of an A in 10 three-credit courses could lower your GPA by about 0.09 points.
